Par files donated .par, .par2, .p?? were originally an opensource project to overcome the unreliability of large files in usenet. Often such files had missing byte segments or were corrupt causing a large file to be incomplete. Par files attemp to "fix" these corrupt files to create a whole complete file. Saving the user having to download every file again. But how do they work?

PAR files are essential to a good newsgroup experience. With usenet large amounts of data is transferred very quickly between servers, as with any large data transfer task margins for error are high and often files become damaged or corrupt. This means that game, movie or mp3 that you are downloading may be unuseable. To overcome this we use something called par files. In this guide I'll start by showing how to repair damaged files using Quickpar one of my favourite par recovery utilities. Followed by explaining how they work and how to create them yourself.
As a brief explination par files end in .par or .par2, this is dependant on which version. The most common nowadays being par2 which is version 2 of the file format. Par files work together to fill in missing files or blocks. With the original .par file you had to complete a missing file for example mydownload.rar02 with a full par file, mypar.par. The par file would replace the .rar02 file and complete the download. However par2 is a bit more advanced. It can repair files at block level. So if you have two broken files mydownload.rar01 and mydownload.rar02 both 40% damaged plus a single mypar.par2 file. Then you can use this single par to repair both files. I'll go into this in further depth later on.

If you use grabit then it will automatically repair your par files for you. So if you have this then no need to follow this guide. Those who don't I would advise using Quickpar its a very useful utility to repair broken files. More to come cut short...
