newsgroup.overview

Newsgroups are without a doubt my favorite method for file sharing. Originally created to provide a way of text distribution to users based on hot topics and groups of topics, the craze soon moved onto the transfer of binary data which allows newsgroups to hold large chunks of data ready for distribution.

Newsgroups very quickly advanced in technology as ISP's often provided newsgroup access as part of their internet packages. Offering a very low latency high speed transfer of the data. Suddenly emerged commercial applications for downloading the data, offering advanced graphical features which allowed the main stream user to take advantage of newsgroups.

The main disadvantage of newsgroups is the possibility of corrupt damaged files. Often larger files are distributed as split rar or zip files. If ones of these files are incomplete on the server or corrupt then the larger file cannot be opened with one hundred percent data integrity. This has been overcome with the introduction of PAR files. These provide a parity check on the data to make sure the data is complete and accurate.

if you ISP does not provide a reliable or complete service; there are many companies which will provide a service at a small fee allowing access to there newsgroup servers. Often with the guarantee of a certain percentage of completion and number of days of retention.

If not treated properly then newsgroup can seem complicated and a hassle to learn. However with some of our quick guides you will be up and running in no time and you will see just how easy it can be to download data from newsgroups.
