Internet Relay Chat

MiRC

MiRC is the world’s most well known and popular Internet Relay Chat application for the windows operating system. It’s used by millions of people worldwide to provide an enhanced set of features while communicating on irc. ( http://www.mirc.com)

mirc.guide

MiRC uses a standard windows installer. We can download this from the MiRC download page HERE. At the time of writing this the current version of MiRC is 6.35. However the install should be similar for most versions. On running the exe file you should be prompted with the following window:

Figure 2

Next you will be prompted by a license agreement screen, if you accept then agree to continue. You should then be prompted to choose an install directory, feel free to change this to any folder you wish. Click next and then choose your install type, I would suggest full as it will have everything you require. Finally select some additional tasks and select next then finish. It could not really be any simpler.

So if we launch the application and we should see a message to register or continue. The license is very inexpensive and I hope everybody decides to support the software and buy a copy. For now I will cancel and register later on this demo copy. The options menu should now appear (I've filled in some temp details for an example):

So we have our details filled in, lets now connect to a server. Click on the server option on the left and you should be prompted with a list of servers:

Figure 4

In this instance I have selected EFnet one of the most popular servers, however there are so many to choose from depending on your interests. We click ok and the window will close. Finally to connect we click on the yellow lightening bolt in the top left corner. We will now connect onto the server. If your nickname and alternate nickname is already taken by another user then you will have to change it, otherwise you should hopefully receive a list of available channels:

Figure 5

Now you can either double click on one of these to join or type in the channel name a new channel of your own for example "#p2presource":

Figure 6

Now I am in the #p2presource channel on EFnet, the @ symbol next to my name means I am a channel admin, I have the options to ban, or kick users. However we will give more advanced tutorials on this.

Congratulations, you now have connect to an IRC server, joined a chat room and are ready to chat. Now its up to you to decide what to say. Please also read our advanced guides and safety guides if you are more interested.
