Who takes part

Roles In The Scene

So now we know what the scene is, who exactly is required to keep it running? There are multiple roles in the scene and each and every one play their part in keeping the scene running. Without all the roles the scene would be chaos and never be as successful and powerful as it is today.

Siteops

Siteops (Site Operators) are the most powerful role in the scene (In most cases). Siteops are the people who run each server. Most sites tend to have two to three Siteops, although some only have one and some have many more. A siteop will manage the site, making sure that it runs smoothly, has no down time, etc... Usually Siteops will recruit the couriers, affiliates, nukers and techs. They are the equivalent to a Managing Director in the business world. They have full power over the site to delete users, remove files and make up the rules which run the site. Most Siteops tend to be very knowledgeable about the scene and how it runs, a good Siteop usually means the difference between a site failing and not. Some Siteops are only given the power because they own the server or server connection and in these cases tend to be the downfall of the site, these people are in the scene purely to assert their power and it will create a very poor site.

Couriers

Couriers are seen as the lowest in the pecking chain. However without the couriers the site will not function. It is their job to transfer files from all of their sites to each individual site. In return for this they get credits, this tend to be on a 1:3 ratio, therefore for each megabyte that they upload they can download three. A good set of couriers will make the site fast and attract the better couriers to join. Things changed dramatically in the scene since about 2004, curriers used to manually have to transfer files using applications such as PFTP-Mew, FlashFXP or newly FTPRush. However as time went on and people are busy with lives, auto traders were developed. These allow files to be transferred automatically by the software. The couriers program in a set of parameters which will send a signal to the software to transfer the files. Nowadays a good couriers seems to be dependent on the quality and speed of their scripts rather than how accurate and dedicated they are.

Affiliates

Affiliates are the very heart of the scene; they are the ones who release the files. Affiliates specialise in releasing files before the competing affiliates. These can range from DVD’s, games, mp3, tv shows...the list goes on. They tend to have inside sources and release movies games and videos before official release dates or soon after. By doing this they are granted permission to “PRE” the releases on certain sites. This involves uploading the files to the sites they affiliate, completely unknown and at a certain point in time they will automatically release them all online. Now when I said earlier Siteops are the most powerful, affiliates are the exception. In most cases weak affiliates are looking for good sites and will doing anything for access. However some affiliates are well known and to have these on your site is classed as an honour. In this case they tend to dictate the rules to the Siteops. One of the most well known affiliates is a group called “Centropy”. They released movies long before they even hit the cinemas, for the honour of having them on your site the site had to be completely given control to them. They dealt with all security aspects to make sure that they never got caught. However being an affiliate is a dangerous game, the FBI busted this group in 2005 and all members were arrested. Having good affiliates attracts the best curriers as it means they can transfer to other sites before anybody else and without these people the scene would not exist.

Nukers

There are actually two types of nukers, “Global” nukers and “Site” nukers. Each release must meet a certain criteria of rules, it is a global nukers job to check the releases and make sure they adhere to the scene standards. They are basically quality assurance testers. If a release is nuked then they release a news message to all sites that this release is nuked. Now comes in the site nukers. When they see this release they decide if it applies to their sites and if so they “nuke” the release. What this means is on the site server they folder is tagged with a “NUKED-“ tag in front of it so they people know not to download to it. It also means that everybody who sent the files for that release loose credits, this will depend on the size of the nuke. If it is a global nuke they it is usually nuked 1X. This means they the currier looses there credits that they gained from uploading the files. There are also site nukes, which are rules only specific for the site. The site nukers nuke these files also which tends to be more sever, usually 3X which means the currier looses more than they upload.

Tech

Without a good tech the site will not run. As the word suggest they deal with all technical aspects of the site servers. This tends to be setting up the FTP software, creating the IRC bot and scripts and general security and upkeep of the server, this would be similar to an IT support team in business. The best sites tend to have the best techs who know so much about linux, glftpd, drftpd, tcl, mirc bot scripting, mrc scripting and so on. You find that most techs are not actually interested in the illegal fileshaing aspects, but just enjoy computing in general and want to learn new things.

Pre-Bot Owners

Pre-bot owners run the IRC pre-bot for the site. A real site needs a pre bot to exist and some tend to be better than others. A pre bot is basically a database that contains all the release times of when the files have been released to the public. Some bots are so good that they are accurate to the second and these are the most sought after, some are well known for their huge databases that go back 20-30 years. When a release is uploaded to the site then the pre bot puts a message on IRC to say that this particular release was PRED a certain amount of time ago. Most sites have time limits and tend not to let releases on their site which are older than 10 minutes old.
