Why?

The addiction

I can understand why people are curious about the scene, why it sounds exciting and why they want to be part of it. However I never understood why people will do the same thing every day for a year, two years, ten years or even thirty years. I never understood why people would miss work, school, family day outs just to sit in front of their computer screens and transfer files from one server to another, all to look powerful to strangers. Then I realised they don’t do it because they want to, they do it because they have to, they are addicted, they can’t stop.

Once it has its hold, it becomes very difficult to become free again. I can promise you its far better to spend your time seeing your friends, watching your family grow up, working on a new business proposition...and so on. The scene is a prison in itself and you don’t ever want to be like that.

I find a lot of people do it because they are lonely, they want friendship, and they want people to know who they are (well their virtual alter ego, not the actual person). Some people just genuinely have troubled lives and think the scene will solve all their problems; it’s an escape from the real world.

I’ve heard people say that “I don’t even watch what I download, I just collect it now”. I think they have lost focus of why they started out in the first place.

The problem that makes it worse for people to quit is that everybody online is so well connected. They cannot sit in front of their computers without a popup saying can you help with this and that. I just got a new site, a new affiliate, a new script...and peer pressure pulls them very quickly back in.

I've spoken to people before that have lost their wives because they spend 18 hours a day at their computer. Fair enough if you are doing it for 500k a year and working overtime, then its an acceptable loss (lol), but to steal software, its really not worth it.

I know people that have lost their jobs or stuggle to find new jobs because they are addicted to irc, they miss an hour one day beacuse of a new pre or race. The next thing they have missed two hours, a day, a week. Everything is now an uphill stuggle and to cope they stay on irc and escape their troubles. Its a viscious circle that even the strongest willed person can find very difficult to get out of.

The worst possible outcome is that you end up in prison, the scene is not illegal, but downloading and uploading illegal content is and if you get caught your best case is a fine, your worst case is a prison scentence. I can assure you that they type of people who sit all day at a computer are not the kind of people that want to be going to prison.

I urge everybody, don’t steal, don’t ever try to become part of the scene, it will only bring you regret!

sup, just came accross this post, and i hate to admit it, its all true, the scene is an addiction, we compete on the net coz we either have nothing to do in reality, no life, no friends etc etc, and peer pressure does have alot to do with it.... but ... read more »
