The Scene is the ultimate file sharing escapade. The scene is a congregation of the world’s best file sharing enthusiasts. It’s run by people with fat wallets and high technical resource. It has however now become a very commercial arena, rather than its original “secret society” style roots.

The Scene isn't a piece of software, a place or a type of download. It’s a group of people with one common goal, downloading the latest files as quickly as humanly and technically possible. It actually originated many years ago, when groups of computer “geeks” would quite literally travel to each other’s houses and trade software which was pirated. We are talking floppy disks from the five and a quarter era, the mid 1970’s. Now because travelling is an inconvenience and the internet was starting to kick off, there became a new opportunity to transfer files without leaving your desk.
Small groups of individuals formed social networks, similar to the likes of your now common large scale sites like bebo and facebook. However the sole purpose was to allow illegal software to be transferred online. It is most people’s nature to take something for free if you think you can get away with it. If that wasn’t the case then most people probably wouldn’t be reading this guide right now.
As these social groups grew, they formed small subsidiary groups which competed against each other to crack and release the software the fastest. It soon went from all about the file sharing to a game, an illegal game on a large scale. It was decided by the heads of the group that they would tag their releases, similar to a football teams in sports. However rather than having the same coloured tops, they attached ascii files with every release. These text files contained details of what they had cracked and released and a logo which represented their group. These later became known as NFO files, which you will find attached to most scene releases files nowadays.
